Huang Ruoshun;School of Liberal Arts, Nanjing University;
An in-depth exploration of names(深察名號) is the key principle that runs through the aesthetics and political philosophy of Dong Zhongshu's(董仲舒) articles. He establishes a new way of writing. The previous writing style that was dominated by political nous and mainly dwelt on the advantages and disadvantages of policies in memorials to the throne in the early and middle period of the Western Han Dynasty is now replaced by a new writing style in techniques of the study of Confucian classics that is profound and graceful, deliberate yet moderate, which has been established as the new aesthetic paradigm for writing ever since. Meanwhile, an in-depth exploration of names is essentially a methodology of political philosophy to study and determine righteous causes and to observe and study ethical principles, based on which Dong Zhongshu's aesthetics of writing is formed to adequately demonstrate his grand contemplation on political order and Confucian ethical codes. Dong associates "names" with the "Mandate of Heaven", and interprets the "name" as the heavenly message through sages, which is definitely theological.
