On You Guo’en’s View of Chinese Literary History and His Construction of Early Chinese Literary History: The Evolution of the Views of Chinese Literary History in the First Half of the 20th Century

In the 20 th century, You Guo'en(游國恩) had a significant impact in the construction of Chinese literary history. The views of Chinese literary history in the first half of the 20 th century could be generally divided into three categories: the broad-sense literary view of the traditional Writing-Doctrine School(文道派), the narrow-sense literary view of the Writing-Rhetoric School(辭章派), and the pure literary view derived from the New-Literature School(新文學派). You Guo'en's view of literary history went through a developmental process from the literary view of the Six-Period School(六朝派) to a compromising literary view of the above three schools of thought. Meanwhile, he was substantially influenced by Zhang Xuecheng's(章學誠) view. On the basis of Zhang Xuecheng's works and views of writing and rhetoric, You Guo'en determined the objects of his literary history. In his earlier narration of pre-Qin literature, he still adopted the narrative framework of the early schools of thought from the Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties(上古三代). Lin Chuanjia's(林傳甲) Chinese Literary History(《中國文學史》) straightened out Chinese literary history from the perspectives of governance and rhetoric, whose academic contribution is appreciated in this article.
